Lawyer and mother-of-two Shazia Vento “can’t wait” to enjoy the added freedoms as lockdown eases. She’s excited for her family of four to reunite with her sister, brother-in-law, niece and nephew.
The sisters – who have only met twice during the past year – have found the separation tough, not only for them but also for the four cousins, aged between three and nine.
“We video call each other but it’s not the same,” says Shazia, 43. “Soon we’ll be meeting them in gardens so I’m hoping for some good weather over the Easter holidays.”
While they are also looking forward to meeting friends outside, Shazia and her husband Cosma, 47, who is also a lawyer, are most keen for their daughter Sofia and son Zak to socialise with other children and have outdoor play dates again. “Being three and six, they have completely different interests from each other,” says Shazia. “You can tell that they miss interaction. It’s so important at their age.”
Sofia returned to school on 8 March, but Zak hasn’t yet started nursery. “It’s Zak who I feel has really missed out. He’s never really had the chance to socialise with children, even things like learning how to share and play nicely. He’s had two birthdays in lockdown and as he’s three, I don’t know if he remembers a time when we did things. Sometimes I wonder: ‘does he think this is life?’”
Now that her 76 year-old mother Farida, who lives in the family home, has received both doses of the vaccine, Shazia feels more confident about the rules being relaxed. And her sister Farah will be the first one invited over. “She’s my priority,” says Shazia. “I’m going to order one of those home delivery cream tea boxes and we’ll sit in the garden and eat and drink tea together.”
Every day people gather in front of its impressive gates to soak up the prestige and pageantry of Buckingham Palace. But the formality of the façade stands in stark contrast to its secluded garden.
Hidden from sight, it is first and foremost the Queen’s private London garden. Like its owner, however, it fulfils many roles – from the famous garden parties to concerts, sporting events and it even serves as a helicopter pad.
Beyond these private and public functions, the garden is a green lung at the centre of one of the world’s biggest and busiest cities.
